'hussein obama' remarks

Senator John McCain repudiated remarks made at a rally for himself where Senator Obama's middle name was mentioned three separate times when the presidential hopeful was being criticized. Senator Obama's heritage and ties to the Muslim religion and culture has been of continuous interest for those in the political realm, both for those who attempt to play it down and play it up, depending on what their political interests are. However, when the issue of Bill Cunningham, a conservative talk-show radio host mentioning Senator Obama's middle name three times was questioned, Senator McCain apologized. Senator McCain stated that Senator Obama was a "man of integrity" and such comments about his middle name were inappropriate at the rally and would not happen again. A spokesperson for Senator Obama respectfully stated their appreciation for Senator McCain's apology.

Senator Obama is in fact a practicing Christian and his middle name was given to him after his father, Barack Hussein Obama, sr, who was not Arabic, but rather Kenyan in origin. However, Senator Obama's name has often been the victim of criticism from the conservative realm, playing upon a stereotypical fear of those with links to Arabic culture and the Muslim religion after the attacks of 9/11, in an attempt to alienate him from mainstream America as a presidential hopeful.
